One thing up front: kratom is a botanical for adults 21 and older. The FDA has not approved kratom for any use and has not found it safe or effective to treat, cure, or relieve any condition. What is kratom, and where does it come from?
Kratom is the common name for Mitragyna speciosa, an evergreen tree in the coffee family that grows in the hot, humid regions of Southeast Asia. Think Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the island of Borneo. Farmers harvest the leaves, dry them, and grind them into a fine powder. That powder is the base for almost everything you see on the shelf, from loose powder to capsules to the concentrated extracts.
The leaf naturally contains compounds called alkaloids. The main one is mitragynine, which is the most abundant alkaloid in the plant. You will also hear about 7-hydroxymitragynine, often shortened to 7-OH. In the natural leaf, 7-OH is only present in trace amounts. We will come back to 7-OH at the end, because concentrated 7-OH products are a separate category that is restricted in Texas and that we do not carry.
Is kratom an opioid? No, kratom is not a classical opioid and it is not morphine. It is a plant. Some of its alkaloids are active at opioid receptors in the body, which is why you may see it discussed alongside that topic, but kratom itself is not scheduled as a controlled substance at the federal level. We describe it simply as a botanical for adults.
What do the vein colors (red, green, white) actually mean?
The color you see on the label, red, green, or white, refers to the color of the vein and stem running through the leaf when it was picked, plus how the leaf was handled afterward. It is a description of the leaf and its processing, not a promise about how a product will affect you. Soil, climate, and drying method all shift the final makeup of the leaf, so color alone never certifies anything.
- White vein generally comes from younger leaves, often dried indoors away from strong light.
- Green vein comes from leaves at a middle stage of maturity. Many Guests treat green as the balanced, middle-of-the-road starting point.
- Red vein comes from the most mature leaves, usually given a longer dry, more sun or UV exposure, and sometimes fermentation.
So if you compare a Bali Red Vein Kratom Powder next to Kratom Spot Malay Capsules, Green Vein next to Kratom Spot White Borneo Capsules, the color tells you about leaf maturity and drying, not a guaranteed experience. Choose based on what you want to try and what your own preference turns out to be over time. Start small with any new product.
What are the main kratom strains: Maeng Da, Bali, Malay, Borneo, Thai?
Strain names sound official, but most are trade and marketing labels rather than strict botanical categories. They usually point to a growing region, a heritage style, or a vendor grade. Here is how the names you will see most often are used in the trade.
- Maeng Da is Thai slang that translates roughly to “pimp grade.” It was coined as a strength and quality marketing term, not a place. Today it is sourced across Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia and is often a higher-alkaloid or blended selection. - Bali is a classic, widely recognized name tied to Bali and nearby Indonesian growing regions. You will find it as both Bali Red Vein Kratom Powder and Kratom Spot Bali Capsules, Red Vein.
- Malay (often “Green Malay”) references Malaysian-style growing conditions, as in our Kratom Spot Malay Capsules, Green Vein.
- Borneo points to the island of Borneo, the source region for our Kratom Spot White Borneo Capsules.
- Thai references Thailand. OPMS Thai Kratom, Green Vein is OPMS’s plain-leaf “Silver” line in this style, sold as powder and capsules.
Because vendors use these names loosely, treat strain comparisons (say, Green Malay versus Maeng Da, or Red Bali versus another red) as descriptions of how the labels and profiles differ in the trade. They are not health or effect claims. The honest takeaway is that the name tells you region and grade, and the rest comes down to your own preference and trying a small amount.
Which kratom format is right for you: powder, capsules, extract, edible or drink?
Format is often the most practical decision, because it changes taste, prep, portability, and how concentrated the product is. Here is a plain look at each, with the kind of Guest each one tends to suit.
- Powder. Loose ground leaf. It is the most economical per gram and gives you full control, but it is bitter and earthy and needs a little prep, like toss-and-wash or tea. Onset is on the slower side, often around 30 to 45 minutes. Good for Guests who want value and do not mind the taste. Example: Bali Red Vein Kratom Powder, microground for a smooth, blendable texture and lab-tested per batch.
- Capsules. The same plain-leaf powder, pre-measured and packed into a vegan capsule so there is no taste or mess. They cost a bit more per gram and act slower than powder because the shell has to dissolve first. Great for portability and consistency. Kratom Spot capsules hold a precise 0.7 grams each, so the math is easy: roughly 100 capsules is about 70 grams. Examples: Kratom Spot Green Maeng Da, Bali Red Vein, Green Vein Malay, and White Borneo capsules.
- Extract. A concentrated liquid or capsule made from the leaf, far stronger than plain powder, with a faster onset (often around 10 to 20 minutes for liquids). Because it is concentrated, it is easy to over-consume, so start small and follow the label. - Edibles. Flavored, pre-dosed chews you can carry anywhere. They are a premium format and the slowest to come on. Green Roads Kratom Gummies 150mg are dosed by mitragynine (30mg per gummy, 5 per pouch) in Zen Berry Blend and Wild Blood Orange, vegan and lab-tested.
- Drinks and shots. Ready-to-drink, flavored, and pre-measured for convenience. Uchie Kratom Kava Seltzer is a sugar-free 12 oz can with 25 mg mitragynine and 100 mg kavalactones per can, in four flavors. Feel Free Kava and Kratom Tonic is a 2 fl oz pineapple shot that blends noble kava root with natural-leaf kratom.
A quick note on those last two: Uchie and Feel Free combine kratom with kava. Kava is a different plant, Piper methysticum, made from the root, not a type of kratom. Reputable vendors third-party test each batch for purity, potency, heavy metals, and contaminants, and many publish a Certificate of Analysis you can pull by batch code or QR scan. Is kratom legal in Texas, and who can buy it?
Yes, kratom is legal to sell in Texas, and it is legal at the federal level too. Kratom and its alkaloids are not scheduled under the federal Controlled Substances Act. Texas regulates kratom under its Kratom Consumer Protection Act, which means a few firm rules apply in every one of our El Paso stores.
- 21 and older only. Sale to anyone under 21 is prohibited, and we ID.
- No synthetics, and a 7-OH cap. Texas bans synthetic alkaloids and strictly limits concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine, which effectively outlaws isolated 7-OH “shots,” tablets, and the “gas station heroin” style products. The natural trace 7-OH in compliant whole-leaf kratom is fine.
- Accredited lab testing for alkaloids, heavy metals, and contaminants is required.
Enforcement is active. The Texas Attorney General has sued retailers selling products with extremely high 7-OH content, far above the legal limit. That is exactly why El Paso Smoke Shops carries only lab-tested, whole-leaf kratom and approved leaf-based products, and does not sell isolated or concentrated 7-OH.
