Walking up to a humidor for the first time can feel like reading a menu in a language you do not speak. Maduro, Robusto, Connecticut, ring gauge. Our Hosts at Cigars & Cigar Accessories get first-timers started every day, and the good news is the formula is simple. Read three things on the band, pick a forgiving size, and mind a little technique. Here is the same walkthrough we give Guests in person.
How do I choose a cigar as a beginner?
Match three things: wrapper, strength, and size. A light Connecticut-shade wrapper smokes creamy, nutty, and low on pepper, which is exactly what you want first. Keep the strength mild-to-medium so the nicotine stays gentle, and remember that strength and body are separate; a cigar can taste full of flavor while still being mild in nicotine. For size, a Robusto (about 5×50) or a Corona (about 5.5×42) burns evenly and finishes in a manageable 30 to 45 minutes without overcommitting.

On our shelves that translates to Robusto Inspirado White – Macanudo, White Series – Montecristo, Connecticut Nicaragua – Romeo Y Julieta, and Toro Signature Geneve – Davidoff for a refined step up. All are hand-rolled, long-filler cigars that draw and burn cleanly. Skip dark Maduro and Oscuro blends and thick Gordo ring gauges until your palate adjusts.
What is the best beginner cigar at El Paso Smoke Shops?
The benchmark mild cigar is Robusto Inspirado White – Macanudo: a Connecticut Shade wrapper, smooth and creamy, made by General Cigar (a Dominican production with Jamaican brand roots). It is the cigar we hand newcomers more than any other. Close runners are White Series – Montecristo (Dominican, Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper) and Connecticut Nicaragua – Romeo Y Julieta. If you want a touch of sweetness to ease in, the lightly sweet Crystal Cafe – Macanudo or Court Cafe – Macanudo do the job, as does the infused Vanilla – Tatiana.
Want a bolder smoke as you progress? Move up gradually to medium-full picks like Terra Novo Tempus Nicaragua – Alec Bradley, Robusto Romeo Y Julieta Reserva Real Nicaragua, or the sweeter Robusto Maduro 10th Anniv – Perdomo Reserve. Save true full-bodied Nicaraguan puros like Belicoso Antano – Joya De Nicaragua, Toro War Hawk – Henry Clay, and Koi Gurkha Cellar Reserve 18 Year for after your palate has a few sessions under its belt. Never start there.

Are flavored cigars a good on-ramp?
Yes, infused and aromatic cigars are an easy introduction because the added botanical and sweet notes soften the tobacco. From our case that means the Cherry – Tatiana, Euphoria – Tatiana, Groovy Blue – Tatiana, and Harvest Moon – Tatiana line, the Acid blends from Drew Estate such as Kuba Kuba Blondie – Acid, Belicoso Blondie – Acid, and C-Notes Cigars – Acid, plus the lightly sweet Macanudo Cafe series. One important note: these are still genuine tobacco cigars that contain nicotine. The flavor is added to tobacco, not a substitute for it. They are not nicotine-free, and we describe them by flavor only, never as a safer product.
What about technique?
Technique matters as much as the cigar. Cut just above the cap with a guillotine cutter, toast the foot evenly with a butane lighter, and take one slow puff about once a minute. Premium cigars are tasted in the mouth and exhaled, not inhaled, so never inhale. Smoke after a full meal and sip water or coffee alongside it. If you feel a lightheaded buzz, that is the nicotine; eat first, slow down, and choose a milder Connecticut-wrapped cigar. Our Hosts can pair any first stick with a guillotine cutter and a butane lighter at checkout.

How do I store cigars at home?
A proper humidor environment matters far more than anything else. Target 65 to 70 percent relative humidity and 65 to 70 degrees, and keep the box out of sun and heat. The best beginner humidor has a tight seal, a Spanish cedar interior, a calibrated digital hygrometer, and room for a two-way humidity pack such as a Boveda B69 (one Size 60 pack per roughly 25-cigar capacity). A sealed container, often called a tupperdor, with a 69 percent Boveda and a hygrometer is a legitimate low-cost starter. Never use a refrigerator; a fridge runs around 42 percent RH and imparts food odors, which dries and cracks cigars. We carry storage solutions like the RYOT LOCKR case.

Season any new wood humidor before cigars go in, or the dry cedar will pull moisture out of your sticks. Best practice is to use Boveda seasoning packs and keep the box closed for the full break-in, commonly up to 14 days, then swap to maintenance packs; a reading above 70 percent during that initial seasoning is normal and expected, so do not over-correct. If you instead use the distilled-water charge method, that calls for a shorter 3 to 5 day equilibration. Do not blend the two by charging with water and also sealing for 14 days.
About cellophane: leaving the manufacturer wrapper on is the safe, protective default. Cello is breathable, so cigars still humidify through it while the delicate wrapper is shielded from nicks and flavor transfer. Collectors remove it only for multi-year aging. What you should not do is seal cigars in airtight, non-breathable plastic with no humidity source.
Are cigars legal in Texas, and what about Cuban cigars?
Yes. Premium and machine-made cigars are legal to buy and sell in Texas to adults 21 and older. Texas law (Health & Safety Code Ch. 161, HB 1439) sets the minimum age at 21, matching federal Tobacco 21, and we card everyone. As a licensed Texas retailer we sell in-store only and do not ship cigars. The brands on our shelves are the legal non-Cuban versions; for example, the Toro Royale – Cohiba and Corona Macassar – Cohiba we sell are the non-Cuban trademark versions made in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, or Honduras. Cuban-origin cigars remain blocked from US commerce by the OFAC embargo, in force since 1962, so famous marca names exist as two legally distinct versions. Buying in person with valid ID is the plan; we do not ship tobacco.
Whether you are after a first mild Robusto, a celebratory It’s a Boy – Rocky Patel or It’s a Girl – Rocky Patel, or a refined Toro Grand Cru – Davidoff, our Hosts will walk you through the wall. Premium cigars are tobacco products for adults 21+. The FDA warns that tobacco smoke increases the risk of lung cancer and heart disease, that cigars are not a safe alternative to cigarettes, and that nicotine is an addictive chemical.
