What is Newport?

Newport is an American cigarette brand built around menthol. The Lorillard Tobacco Company introduced it in 1957 and named it after the seaport of Newport, Rhode Island. It has been the most popular menthol cigarette in the United States since 1993 and the second best-selling cigarette overall since 1996, accounting for roughly 35 percent of US menthol cigarette sales.

R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company acquired Newport in 2015, and the brand sits today under British American Tobacco. Newport remains best known for its menthol flavor and its standing as the country's leading menthol cigarette.
