How to Clean Your Bong, Pipe and Vape: The Complete Guide

Bongs, spoons, Puffco Peak, Geek Bar, and Lost Mary available at El Paso Smoke Shop.

Why Cleaning Your Pieces Matters More Than You Think

A dirty bong or pipe does not just taste bad, it can actually harbor bacteria and mold that you are inhaling with every hit. A study published in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research found that water pipe water can develop bacteria counts comparable to stagnant pond water within 24 hours of use. Regular cleaning is not about being fussy. It is about not breathing in things you should not be breathing in.

At El Paso Smoke Shops, our Hosts hear the same thing from Guests across all 10 locations: “I know I should clean it more often.” This guide makes it easy, using supplies you probably already have at home.

How to Clean a Glass Water Pipe (Bong)

What You Need

91 percent isopropyl alcohol (the higher the percentage, the better), coarse salt (kosher salt or rock salt works best), hot water, zipper storage bags for smaller parts, and rubber plugs or plastic wrap with rubber bands to seal openings.

Step-by-Step: The ISO and Salt Method

Step 1: Disassemble. Remove the bowl and downstem. These will be cleaned separately.

Step 2: Rinse with hot water. Pour hot (not boiling) water through the piece to loosen surface-level resin. Boiling water can crack glass due to thermal shock, especially if the glass is cold. Use the hottest tap water your faucet produces.

Step 3: Add salt and alcohol. Pour about two tablespoons of coarse salt into the base, followed by enough isopropyl alcohol to fill the chamber about halfway. The salt acts as an abrasive that scrubs the walls while you shake. The alcohol dissolves the resin.

Step 4: Seal and shake. Cover every opening, either with rubber plugs, your palms (wear gloves if you have them), or plastic wrap secured with rubber bands. Shake vigorously for 60 to 90 seconds. For heavy buildup, let it soak for 30 minutes before shaking.

Step 5: Rinse thoroughly. Rinse with hot water until all the salt, alcohol, and loosened resin are gone. You should not smell any alcohol when you are done. Give it a final rinse with room-temperature water.

Step 6: Air dry. Let the piece air dry completely before using it. Any remaining alcohol in the chamber is not something you want to heat and inhale.

Cleaning the Bowl and Downstem

Drop the bowl and downstem into separate zipper bags. Add isopropyl alcohol and a tablespoon of salt to each bag. Seal and shake for 30 to 60 seconds. For caked-on resin, let the parts soak in the bags for a few hours or overnight. Rinse with hot water and air dry.

How to Clean a Glass Dry Pipe

The process for a spoon pipe, sherlock, or chillum is similar but simpler. Drop the pipe into a zipper bag with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt. Seal the bag, shake it for 60 seconds, and let it soak if needed. For the carb hole and mouthpiece, use a pipe cleaner or cotton swab dipped in alcohol to clear out any remaining residue. Rinse with hot water and air dry.

If your pipe has particularly stubborn resin that will not come off with the ISO and salt method, we sell purpose-made glass cleaning solutions at all our locations that use stronger solvents designed specifically for resin removal. Ask a Host at any of our 10 El Paso locations for a recommendation.

How to Maintain Your Vape Device

Disposable Vapes

Disposables require almost no maintenance, which is part of their appeal. The one thing you should do: keep the mouthpiece clean by wiping it with a dry cloth or tissue regularly. Pocket lint and debris can accumulate in the mouthpiece and affect airflow. If your disposable starts tasting burnt or producing less vapor, it is near the end of its life. That is not a cleaning issue; it is time for a new one.

Pod Systems

For pod systems, clean the connection points between the pod and battery with a dry cotton swab once a week. E-liquid can leak and build up on the contacts, which causes poor electrical connection and weak hits. If you use refillable pods, rinse the pod with warm water when switching flavors and let it dry completely before refilling.

Mods and Tanks

Disassemble the tank every week or two and rinse all non-electronic parts with warm water. The drip tip, glass section, and base can be soaked in warm water for 15 minutes to dissolve e-liquid residue. Dry everything thoroughly before reassembling. Replace coils according to the manufacturer is recommendation, usually every one to two weeks depending on use.

Never submerge the mod (battery) itself in water. Wipe it down with a slightly damp cloth and keep the 510 connection (where the tank screws in) clean with a dry cotton swab.

How Often Should You Clean?

Water pipes: Change the water after every session. Deep clean with ISO and salt once a week for regular users, every two weeks for occasional use.

Dry pipes: Quick rinse with hot water every few uses. Full ISO and salt clean every one to two weeks.

Vape devices: Wipe contacts weekly. Replace coils every one to two weeks. Full tank disassembly and rinse every two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular table salt instead of coarse salt?

You can, but it will not work as well. Table salt dissolves too quickly in the alcohol, which means it stops acting as an abrasive before the resin is fully scrubbed off. Coarse kosher salt or rock salt holds its shape longer during shaking and does a better job mechanically scrubbing the glass walls. If coarse salt is all you can find at home, use more of it and shake longer.

Is it safe to use boiling water to clean glass?

We do not recommend it. Pouring boiling water into room-temperature glass creates thermal shock, which can crack or shatter the piece. This is especially true for thinner glass under 5mm. Use the hottest water your tap produces, which is typically around 120 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. That is hot enough to soften resin without risking your glass.

How do I know when my vape coil needs replacing?

Three signs: burnt taste (the most obvious one), reduced vapor production even with a full battery, and a gurgling or spitting sound when you inhale. Most coils last one to two weeks with regular use. If you are using heavily sweetened e-liquids, coils will gunk up faster because the sweetener caramelizes on the coil and cannot be cleaned off. You will probably need to replace those coils weekly.
