What is Clipper?
Clipper is a refillable butane pocket lighter made by Flamagas, a Spanish company founded in 1959. The first Clipper was produced in 1972, and the brand is still manufactured mostly in Barcelona, keeping the same rounded cylindrical shape it has carried for decades. Flamagas now makes around 450 million Clipper lighters a year, which puts it second only to BIC among lighter makers worldwide.
Two things separate a Clipper from a basic disposable. It refills with standard butane gas, so one lighter keeps going instead of being thrown away, and the flint can be pulled out and replaced when it wears down. The printed and patterned bodies are collectible in their own right, which is a big part of why the brand is so widely recognized.
